Gold Coast beach fashion: what to actually wear all year

What to wear on the Gold Coast, from sunrise at Burleigh to windy afternoons at Currumbin — beach hoodies, tees, hats and drinkware picked for Queensland weather.

1. A hoodie beats a jacket on the coast

Gold Coast mornings sit around 12–15°C in winter and warm up fast by 10am. A light beach hoodie you can pull off and shove in a bag beats a jacket you'll end up carrying all day. Salt air and sand are rough on anything structured — soft cotton fleece washes out and keeps going.

2. Dress for the sea breeze, not the forecast

The north-easterly picks up most afternoons from about 11am along the Broadwater, Surfers and Palm Beach. Whatever the temperature says, take one long-sleeve layer. It's the difference between staying at the beach until sunset and packing up early.

3. Oversized tees over singlets for a full day out

Queensland sun is unforgiving even in June. A relaxed heavier-weight tee covers your shoulders, dries quickly after a swim and doesn't cling when you're damp — far more comfortable across a whole day than a singlet plus sunscreen top-ups.

4. A bucket hat you don't mind ruining

Between the surf, the sand and the back of the ute, hats live hard lives here. Pick something washable and casual rather than a good straw hat, and keep it clipped to your bag so it survives the walk back from the break.

5. Cold water, all day

Parking at Burleigh or Coolangatta in January means your drink sits in a hot car. An insulated bottle you refill at the beachfront taps is the single most used thing in a Gold Coast beach bag.

6. Rinse the salt out the same day

Salt and sunscreen break down cotton over time. A cold rinse and a shaded line dry — never a hot dryer — keeps prints sharp and stops that stiff, crunchy feel after a summer of wear.
